The Duke Theseus Chat Show
Act I Scene II becomes a live chat show, with Duke Theseus as host, Hermia and Egeus as guests, and your students as the studio audience asking questions, voting and responding. Students debate arranged marriage, female agency, patriarchy and parental authority using Shakespeare's own words alongside improvised dialogue. It's funny, surprising and genuinely provocative.
Comedy Versus Consent
The Helena and Demetrius scene is performed first as written, then students are asked why they didn't find it funny. Through discussion and redirection they discover that comedy requires consent, equality and power balance. It's one of the most thought-provoking moments in any of our workshops and generates discussion that stays with students long after the day ends.
What Happens in a Shakespeare Rewired Midsummers Workshop
1 ➟ The Complete Story with Student Volunteers
Our actors guide student volunteers through the entire play, the Athenian lovers, the fairy world, the mechanicals and the magic. Using key quotes, tracking character arcs and focusing on motivations, every student in the room understands the complete story before the analytical work begins.
2 ➟ The Duke Theseus Chat Show
Act I Scene II becomes a live chat show. Duke Theseus hosts, with Egeus and Hermia as guests. Students become the studio audience, cheering, booing and asking questions directly to the characters. The scene uses a mix of Shakespeare's original text and improvised dialogue, exploring how Hermia is treated as property in ancient Athens and what that tells us about gender, power and Shakespeare's own sympathies.
3 ➟ Redirecting Helena and Demetrius
Act II Scene I is performed first as written, then students are asked why they didn't laugh. Through discussion, they identify that the scene's aggression makes comedy impossible. Students then redirect the scene to make it genuinely funny, giving Helena control, making Demetrius lose his authority, and discovering through practical experimentation how comedy, power and staging interact.
4 ➟ The Closing Sentiment
Students leave with one lasting idea: Shakespeare wrote his plays on rolls of paper handed to individual actors, which is literally where the word "role" comes from. When you read his plays, use what he intended. Cast them in your imagination, costume them, give them voice and emotion. Hear them the way you want to hear them. That's how Shakespeare comes alive.

How long is the workshop?
Our secondary Midsummer Night's Dream workshop runs for two hours. Ideal as a morning or afternoon session. We can also deliver two workshops in a single day for larger year groups or for another Year Group, with up to 120 students per session.
How many students can take part?
Our secondary workshops work brilliantly with whole year groups of up to 120 students per session. Every student can participate, either through volunteering, directing, questioning or debating.
Is it suitable for all abilities?
Absolutely. The workshop is designed for mixed-ability groups and works particularly well for GCSE sets of all levels. Our actors adapt the depth of analysis and the pace of discussion to match the group in front of them.
What do you need from us on the day?
Very little. We simply need a suitable hall or large classroom, access to a plug socket if required, and a few members of staff to support behaviour in line with your usual school expectations. We bring the costumes, props, energy and expertise.

What can pupils expect?
Expect a lively, practical workshop where pupils become part of the action. Using costumes, storytelling, performance and interactive activities, they explore Shakespeare's characters, themes and language by doing rather than simply watching. No previous acting experience is needed, and every child gets involved.
How far do you travel
We work with schools across the whole of England. Travel costs are factored into our quotation, and we regularly visit schools from Cornwall to Newcastle. Distance is never a barrier to an enquiry.
Is this suitable for both KS3 and KS4?
Yes. We regularly deliver this workshop to Year 7 students encountering Midsummer for the first time and to GCSE groups exploring the play as a set text. The Duke Theseus chat show section generates particularly rich discussion with older students who can engage more deeply with the gender and power themes.
Can you tailor workshops to the topics we're studying?

Yes. Will students need any prior knowledge of Midsummers?
No, not at all. We tell the complete story from scratch. However, the workshop works equally well for students mid-way through studying the play, and the chat show and redirection elements are particularly valuable for groups preparing for GCSE discussion and analytical writing.

Yes. Every Shakespeare Rewired workshop is delivered by experienced professional actors who hold enhanced DBS certificates and regularly work in schools across the UK.
